Director of Viticulture

Job Summary:

The Director of Viticulture will be responsible for driving the vision, strategy and deliberate execution of viticulture practices within the company vineyardsThe Director of Viticulture will be accountable for steering all cultural practices, fertilization, pesticide applications and irrigation within the vineyard hierarchy in order to ensure that fruit is produced to specification and that key business objectives are achieved through the application of best management practices established by the vineyard department.  The Director of Viticulture will oversee the viticulture team and will assist the management team in order to farm vineyard properties by evaluating and directing vineyard practices focused on producing high quality wine grapes that meet Trinchero Family Estates wine program criteria.  The Director of Viticulture will oversee the annual fertility and pesticide budgets for all the company ranches and give management direction on the necessary cultural practices.

Essential Functions:

  • Oversee the viticulture department and all viticulture practices on the company ranches.
  • Monitor all the company ranches for overall health.
  • Monitor and evaluate vineyard insect, disease and weed status; provide direction and recommendations for addressing potential problems.      
  • Monitor irrigation and fertilization programs and provide direction and   recommendations addressing vine water and nutrient status.
  • Prepare yield estimates and update those estimates throughout the season.
  • Maintain the paperwork necessary to remain in compliance with the various sustainable farming programs the vineyards are involved with.
  • Develop annual budgets for cultivation, pest control, disease control, and fertilization programs for the above noted vineyards.
  • Occasionally manage individuals and vineyard worker crews plus effectively interact with winemaking personnel.
  • Recommend areas of improvement addressing crop quality, vineyard practices, cost reduction, and worker safety.
  • Keep abreast of trends and research that may benefit or improve vineyard practices. 
  • Occasionally act as a liaison representing the Trinchero Vineyard Department with regional grower groups, regulatory entities etc. 
  • Experienced with Nitrogen Management Plans implementation, maintaining and monitoring.  
  • Adherence and understanding of Federal and State Food Safety Standards as it applies to harvesting, transportation of grapes for juice and wine production.         
  • Assists in the recruiting, training and development of employees. 
  • Manages and implements career planning and professional development of employees.
  • Manages and ensures annual performance reviews are effective and completed on time.
  • Maintain proper and accurate records pursuant to items listed above

Qualifications:

  • Education:  Bachelor’s degree in Viticulture, Agronomy or related field required.  Master’s degree preferred.
  • Experience:  Ten or more years of related experience.  Thorough knowledge of viticulture practices and principles.
  • Good communications skills and the ability to speak and write Spanish preferred.
  • Proficient computer skills and the ability to deal with spreadsheets email and internet related tasks.
  • Licensed PCA, PCO and CCA preferred.
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and analytical skills
  • Ability to manage priorities and workflow
  • Versatility, flexibility, and a willingness to work within constantly changing priorities with enthusiasm
  • Acute attention to detail
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to lead and manage a diverse group of individuals at all organizational levels effectively.

Working Conditions:

  • Must be able to lift 55 pounds.
  • Exposure to outside elements (heat, wet and/or damp conditions, cold).
  • May require heavy physical work (lifting, bending, climbing, pulling, or squatting for long periods of time).
  • Long hours during crush and peak periods (including all shifts).
  • Work site may be any one of Trinchero Family Estates’ facilities.
  • Work is mainly performed in a vineyard.  The individual is frequently exposed to fumes or   airborne particles from pesticides and sulfur related to weed spraying and sulfuring
  • Noise levels are usually moderate to loud.
  • Hazards:  Occasionally works near moving machinery parts and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and toxic or caustic chemicals.
